.: Transitional Art Deco Copper Plate from Carl Deffner :.

After watching the episodes in the excellent documentary in the previous post, we both were quite inspired to find new treasures. This beautiful, floral and geometric copper charger or plant saucer for some quite special flowers, marked Carl Deffner, Esslingen (c. 1910) has design elements of both the Art Nouveau and the Art Deco (Jugendstil) movements, and having inherited his father’s, Carl Ulrich Christian Deffner, metalworks, Maschinenfabrik Esslingen—making of locomotive engines, in 1900 expanded into tableware, the younger Deffner was indeed responsible for many excellent consumer designs that bridged the two styles. Despite operating in a very competitive environment, Deffner continued producing housewares, and industrial products in support of the railroads, until the late 1950s, when elements of the factories were taken over by WMF and Mercedes-Benz.

.: Swimming or Diving Champion Trophy :.

Here is a quite detailed and old figural trophy in bronze with a solid and substantial onyx or alabaster base. In total, it is 13” high but we do not know much more about its history since the plaque has been removed. Just below the swimmer who is poised to jump, there is a faint relief of four flags. I have seen this banner arranged so somewhere before but I cannot recall exactly where or in what context. He is another mystery that we will have to research.

.: Small Art Deco Bronze Sculpture :.

We don´t exactly what it is. The seller told us, it might be a German trophy from the Saarland. It´s about 8" tall, mixed material (bronze and marble) and shows a young guy holding or throwing a brick.

.: Dunhill Silent Flame Table Lighter c.1935 :.

The model is called "fan dancer" or "Sally Rand". The improved "Silent Flame" lighter mechanism was invented and patented by Irving Florman in 1935 in the USA. The invention was known as the electric cigar lighter "of the type wherein a wick is ignited through the heat of an electrical resistance element". Below are instructions on how to use such lighter. It applies to all Silent Flame Lighters made by Parker of London, Dunhill etc.
The lighter takes two batteries. The lighting stick is filled up with lighter fluid. To light, rest the lightning stick upon the metal railing around the top of the lighter, at the same time touch the protruding point of the lightning stick against the metal figure in the center of the lighter so as to make contact.

These are the Parker (right) and Dunhill (left) versions of the fan dancer (or Sally Rand) model. The Parker version shows the figure with a square base. In contrast, the Dunhill version shows the figure with a round base. The Parker silent flame fan dancer model came in 3 variations: chrome figure on a black base, chrome figure on a brown base, and gold figure on a brown base with gold rails. The Dunhill silent flame dancer model also came in a copper finish on a brown base.

.: Art Deco Chase Copper Dish with Handle and Glass Insert :.

This vintage piece is from the Chase Copper and Brass Company, marked Chase USA with a Centaur-Archer symbol, and has a nice period look to it. The company produced a line of household goods and decorative objects beginning in the 1930s and commissioned some leading artists like Rockwell Kent. Turning manufacturing to support the war effort, they ended this line in the early 1940s but produced a lot of wares and styles that helped define the movement in America.
